Exercise is a crucial part of improving your health, especially as an individual gets older. Some benefits of exercise include:

 Weight loss
 Sleep better
 Reduces risk of disease
 Increases aerobic capacity
 Makes your heart stronger by increasing the stroke volume.
 Increases high density lipoprotein (HDL) or the GOOD cholesterol.
 Lowers high blood pressure.
 Strengthens the bones
 Decreases levels of triglycerides (fat) in your blood.
 Increase immune strength
 Reduces stress and depression
 Increases the quality of circulation throughout your body making your skin look healthier.

There is no excuse for not getting your daily exercise in. The average person wouldn’t make excuses for no eating, so they shouldn’t make excuses for not exercising. If you would substitute a T.V show for your exercise time than that should be all you need. The common three excuses I hear about avoiding exercise include:

 Lack of Time. I heard this countless of times and people always say that they have prior commitments.
 Costly equipment and gym membership.
 Bad weather or inefficient lights at night-time.

The truth of the matter is if you were really desperate to find a way to exercise you would find a way, no doubt. If cost is an issue than just invest in a new pair of running shoes. You could run around your neighborhood and perform some calisthenics when you get home.

Tips to Remember when exercising

Start off slowly: If you have been sedentary for quite some time, do not try to run a marathon, your body won’t appreciate it and it could be dangerous for your health. Start off walking than pick up the pace as you progress. There is no need to go overboard when starting off, take your time and make gradual increases. If you’re overweight I would suggest starting off walking.

Be constant: Don’t exercise for an hour on Monday and wait till the next Monday to exercise again. That’s two long of a break if you’re trying to get in shape, or loss weight. It has been researched that 30 minutes of exercise a day is the minimum needed to reap any weight loss benefits. I personally would recommend 60 minutes if you want to lose weight more quickly. Of course, don’t do it all in one shot. Do one 30 minute session in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

Gradually increase your intensity: After you get use to a particular exercise your body won’t gain any benefits, its time to change the intensity. As again, give your body as long as it needs for it to get use to a program, than after it has plateau move on to something more challenging.

Have fun: If you’re doing exercise and are not having fun, than I would guess that you will not stick to it for long. Find something exciting to do, so that you can kill two birds with one stone. You will get your exercise in, and you will also have a good time.

Set goals: There is no point in doing something without a purpose or meaning to you. Always set goals for yourself, and never stop doing it. When you set goals you have something specific to aim for and you will be more determined during exercise.

Mark Twain once said, “The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” Like Mr. Twain’s rumored demise, the notion that the traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is no longer a useful part of a financial plan has been greatly exaggerated. Contributions to a traditional IRA continue to be a viable financial and retirement planning tool despite non-deductibility for some individuals.

All you need to make a traditional IRA contribution are earnings as an employee or as a self-employed person. The amount that can be contributed for 2006 is the lesser of $4,000 ($5,000 if you have attained age 50) or your earnings from your work. There is no minimum age for making a traditional IRA contribution for tax purposes. If a 16 year old works for the summer, makes $4,000 and blows it all at the mall, the tax code permits Mom, Dad or whomever to give him/her $4,000 to contribute to a traditional IRA on his behalf. There is a maximum age for IRA contributions. No traditional IRA contributions may be made for people over 70 1/2, even if they are still working as hard as they were at 30 1/2.

An additional contribution of $4,000 is permitted if the traditional IRA participant has a spouse who doesn’t work outside the home. If both spouses are under age 50, the total contribution in this situation is $8,000 and the spouses can divide the amount contributed up any way they choose, so long as neither receives more than $4,000 into his/her account.

The question of deductibility is often confusing to many taxpayers. There are two questions that may have to be answered to determine if a traditional IRA contribution is fully deductible, partially deductible or not deductible. The first question is: “Are you covered by a plan?” If the answer is “no,” then the traditional IRA contribution is deductible regardless of the taxpayer’s income. Whether or not you are covered by a plan depends on the type of employer-sponsored plan in place. If you’re not sure, your employer can tell you because employers must check a box on every employee’s W-2 stating whether they are covered.

If the answer is “yes” and you are covered by a plan but your spouse is not, then only you are exposed to the next test. Your spouse’s contribution to a traditional IRA is fully deductible up to new phase-out limits of $150,000 to $160,000 of joint income. If both of you are covered by a plan then the next test will determine to what extent both of you can deduct your contributions.

Assuming coverage by a plan, the next question that must be answered is: “How much is your income?” For 2006, taxpayers with adjusted gross income (AGI) of $50,000/75,000 (single/married filing jointly) or less, the contribution is fully deductible. For taxpayers with AGI over $60,000/$85,000 (single/married filing jointly), no IRA deduction is permitted. For those with an AGI between those levels, the amount of the deduction is phased out proportionately. There is a $400 floor to the deduction that will apply to those whose AGI is close to the upper limit.

For example, a single person who is covered by an employer’s plan has an AGI (excluding the IRA deduction) of $55,000. Since that’s 50% of the way from $50,000 to $60,000, the taxpayer may deduct $2,000 of a $4,000 contribution ($4,000 * 50%). The other $2,000 of the contribution is non-deductible.

The best part of the traditional IRA deal is the tax-deferred growth potential your investments can enjoy inside the account. Your earnings will grow much faster when not dragged down by the weight of a current tax bill. Your financial planner can show you whether and how a traditional IRA can fit into your retirement plan.

Print brokers have been around since the invention of the printing press. Some are “fly by night” shysters that will do you over if given the chance; others are reputable multi million dollar companies that have branded their trust and experience with years of service. It is the “fly by night” sham operations that gives the profession a bad name, but all in all the concept of one company sourcing all of your print projects is brilliant.

Let’s take a look at what a print broker does and how they can save your company time and money.

Not all printing presses are the same. They’re just not. They vary in sizes, uses, capabilities, etc. Some are built for high quantity projects, some are built for low quantity projects…some are for labels, some are for signs. As many different products there are to be printed, there are just as many different machines to do the printing.

Print brokers go out into a defined network of printers and manufacturers and match your job to the best equipment built for that particular job. Usually this results in several manufacturers competing to produce your product, which means lower prices for you the consumer.

Not only will using a broker save you time by not having to search and call 50 different printers for one job, but they can give you feedback and advice on the most efficient way to set up and run your projects which will save you even more money.

If you are looking to have your products printed on the “best fit” equipment then you need to tap into power of an experienced and knowledgeable print broker.

Both Inuit Eskimo art and Native American art have gained international recognition as valuable art forms over the past few decades. However, the rising popularity of both Inuit Eskimo art and Native American art has resulted in the increased proliferation of imitations and mass-produced reproductions of original Native arts. Some obvious fakes are made in Asia from molds where the finished pieces are forms of plastic, resin or ceramic.

Other fakes are actually made of cast stone simulating actual Inuit Eskimo art carvings and wood for imitation Native American carvings. These fakes, which are harder to distinguish from authentic artwork, are often hand carved reproductions of an original piece of artwork. Workshops have illegally reproduced hundreds of copies without the artisan’s permission. The counterfeiting companies would then attach some type of tag that claims the fake pieces were influenced by aboriginal artisans and even background information on the Native designs used in the artwork. Some even go as far as adding in Inuit syllabics on the bottom of the fake Inuit Eskimo art carvings.

These are very deceptive tactics on their part since they give the consumers the impression that the imitations are authentic and income producing for the aboriginal communities. Fakes and imitations have lowered the image of authentic Inuit Eskimo art and Native American art. Sales of genuine aboriginal artwork have declined which in turn have deprived aboriginal artisans of income. The argument against these claims is that not every consumer can afford to buy authentic Inuit Eskimo art or Native American art so the souvenir level reproductions legitimately meet this part of the market. The imitations, which are usually low priced, enable students visiting Canada for example, to bring home a Canadian souvenir without breaking their travel budget. This claim would have more support from Native communities if aboriginal artisans were paid a fair royalty as income for each imitation and reproduction piece sold. However, this is seldom the case since most of the time, no royalties are paid at all.

The obvious fakes can be spotted quite easily. An imitation of an Inuit Eskimo art carving spotted at a gift shop was not made of stone as it was not cold to the touch. It was very light in weight unlike a stone which has some mass to it. The detail and the bottom of the piece had the molded look to it. There was even a sticker on the bottom with the company name Wolf Originals. Side by side comparisons of similar pieces in the souvenir store revealed that they were all identical in every detail, which is impossible for original artwork.

A black totem pole had a very flat uniform back and bottom again giving away the fact that it came from a mold. Other totem poles made from wood or mixed wood with a claim that they were hand painted were among many similar pieces in the store. All of these examples were each priced less than $20 Canadian which was another indicator that they were not original artwork.

Imitations of Inuit Eskimo art sculptures were recently spotted for sale in shops located at major Canadian airports. From a distance, these Inuit Eskimo art sculptures of hunters, polar bears and Inuit women with children looked very authentic. However, each piece had several identical copies on the same shelf.

To avoid accidentally buying a fake or imitation, it is suggested that consumers buy Inuit Eskimo art and Native American art from only reputable galleries and dealers rather than from tourist souvenir shops. A piece of original, authentic Inuit Eskimo art or Native American art is one of a kind. There should be no other identical pieces on the shelves. In addition, original Inuit Eskimo art carvings should come with an Igloo tag (or sticker) which is a Canadian government registered trademark. Inuit Eskimo art carvings that are certified by the Canadian government to be handmade by Inuit artisans, come with Igloo tags.

The Insurance Way28 Aug 2008 07:22 pm

Choosing the right family health insurance is the greatest challenge. You have to consider a lot of things before you decide on one. Naturally, questions range from benefits to how much you have to pay. Still, it is better to ask certain questions for your own peace of mind. These questions are basically about the percentage of costs covered and what benefits you will get. The choice of course is another factor; whether you can choose your primary care physician, or require a referral to the specialist. Now comes the money factor involving how much you can pay for the monthly premium, the deductibles and the co-insurance costs.

Selecting the right health plan depends upon your purchasing power and the type of insurance you need. If you want to pay less for consultations, hospital visits and medical bills, you have to opt for a higher-premium plan. Health plans also differ with the way you wish to consult a practitioner: some limit you to a specific practitioner while others allow you to visit any doctor you want.

The other plans are the affordable ones, which include the fee-for-service, HMOs, PPOs and POS. In the fee-for-service plan you have to pay the medical practitioner a fee for the consultation or the medical service he provides you. The doctor, the hospital or you can claim the reimbursement for the covered services under this insurance.

Fee-for-service policies reimburse only 80% of your expenses; you have to pay the rest 20%. This portion of the medical expenses that you bear is called the co-insurance.

The next type of plan is managed care. The managed care plans also give comprehensive health care for their members. In managed care plans you need not pay a fee for the service; instead, it is pre-paid. HMOs, or health maintenance organizations, provide managed care plans. This is one of the affordable health insurance options. The HMO will charge you a monthly or quarterly premium. As extras you have to pay only small amounts of ‘co-payments’, and there is no co-insurance or deductible. You are entitled to visit any doctor who has a contract with the HMO.

The other is the preferred provider organization (PPO), which combines the features of the fee-for-service plan and the benefits of the HMO services. Here the member can choose a doctor from the network of doctors registered with the PPO. A ‘co-payment’ is there for certain services or visits, and you have to pay a deductible too. The payment is divided between the insured and the insurance company at a mutually-agreed-upon ratio.

The point of service (POS) is the last one that is similar to the HMO services, but here is a coordinating physician who will refer you to a specialist. Short-term medical plans are yet another type for when you do not have a permanent job, or you are out of your job temporarily. Whatever be the plans, be careful in choosing them, because a health plan is basically one that helps you not to fall into debt traps when emergencies come.

Compared to some of the more popular products by Samsung the Armani is uninspiring. The styling of this mobile handset is nothing special. Compared to some of the other models for the price the Armani is quite a little basic.

The Samsung Armani is equipped with Polyphonic (64 channels), MP3 ring tones as well as a vibrating tone . Getting on to the display the phone is supplied with a 2.6 inch screen, which is a nice big display for the cost of this phone. The screen is a TFT touchscreen, 256K colors. Compared to other models, the Armani is one of the most compact handsets on the market. In terms of colours this mobile phone can only be bought in Black. The Samsung Armani weighs only 85 g. A Standard battery, Li-Ion 880 mAh, battery is fitted to the Samsung Armani. In terms of the all important battery cell duration the Samsung Armani has 220 hrs standby time and 6:00 talk time. The Armani has support for 2G GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900 . A 3.15 MP, 2048×1536 pixels, video(CIF) camera is integrated into the Armani camera. A WAP 2.0/xHTML browser allows this handset to be used for mobile Internet access. The Samsung Armani is has bluetooth, meaning interactivity with a great deal of contemporary mobile phone accessories very easy. Additional features of the Samsung Armani include:

  • Document viewer (.pdf, .doc, .ppt, .xls)
  • Java MIDP 2.0
  • Voice memo
  • MP3/ACC/ACC+ player
  • Organizer
  • Regardless of being a pretty recent model, there are now far more competing products on the market. It is therefore quite easy to find a fantastic deal on the Armani.

Mobile handsets have become such a basic need that large numbers of consumers do not bother to shop around for a bargain. Because they can so easily buy a mobile handset in a local shop, or perhaps even a superstore at an affordable price that it hardly seems worth taking the extra time and looking for the best offers. The thing these individuals do not realise is that, by far, the majority of the good deals are predominantly offered from the Internet as opposed to high street shops, where significant savings can be found from your home. By looking at a mobile cell phone comparison site is not only the simplest but is also one of the most cost effective way to purchase a mobile phone.

On October 17, 2005 President Bush’s sweeping bankruptcy reform law goes into effect forever changing the rules of debt collection in this natiion. Consumer advocates and the public appear to be completely unaware of the total and complete victory of the creditors under the new legislation. This article opens the door to the Trogan Horse so that consumers can prepare themselves for the worse.

The most important aspect of the bankruptcy code was the “automatic stay” provision. This allowed consumers to file for bankruptcy at anytime during the creditor’s collection process putting an immediate stop to all contact and collection activities from the creditor. The new law requires that a debtor receive credit counseling from an approved non-profit credit counseling agency for 180 days prior to filing Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy.

While this may sound benevolent, a much closer look at the practical effect of this provision reveals the crafty peeling of the debtor’s rights. The 180 day requirement is to provide the credit counseling agency the opportunity to work out payment plans with creditors. However, during this same period of time the creditor is not restrained from collection efforts. For example, Margaret is a homeowner in Jacksonville, Florida and is six months behind on her mortgage. As a rule, credit counseling agencies only work with credit card companies and have little or no training with dealing with mortgage companies.

After receiving foreclosure papers, Margaret goes to see her attorney to file for bankruptcy and is told that she must first seek credit counseling before filing for bankruptcy protection. Meanwhile, the foreclosure proceeds on schedule and a sale date is set 120 days later. However, Margaret still has not completed her 180 day requirement. What will happen to Margaret’s home? That’s right! The home will be sold and she cannot stop the sale by filing bankruptcy.

This is the most sweeping shift in debt collection in the past 50 years. Margaret’s only hope will be to work out a repayment plan or a loan restructure with her mortgage company. This is a process called loss mitigation and is explained in great detail to consumers in our new book, How to Save Your Home, ISBN#09753754-0-7, $19.95, SYH University, LLC, 2005 which is sold at Amazon.com.

Loss Mitigation works because lenders lose an average of $28,000 to $50,000 per foreclosure nationwide. It is a myth that the lender wants your home and makes a profit off of foreclosure. A lender has to pay attorney fees, court and collection costs, maintain fire insurance, hire a real estate professional, repair structural and other damage to the home, and pay property taxes. The homeowner can work out an agreement with the lender in over 90% of cases. Our company has provided housing counseling service to thousands of homeowners and loss mitigation absolutely works.

In conclusion, it is up to the consumer to educate and prepare themselves for worse case scenarios. How to Save Your Home is an excellent training tool and will teach homeowners how to protect themselves under the new bankruptcy law. Most Americans do not have health or disability insurance and are vulnerable to job layoffs because of a stagnant economy. Who amongst us is immune to heart attacks, business failure, strokes, law suits, tax liens or other challenges that life sometimes presents. One pay check is literally what separates many families from home security and despair and the new bankruptcy law will severly punish those who slip behind on their mortgage payments.

Herbert Addison, JD, CHC is a Certified Housing Counselor and a member of the Virginia Association of Housing Counselors. Mr. Addison is co-author of the new book, How to Save Your Home, and has helped thousands of families to save their homes from foreclosure sales.

    Pets26 Aug 2008 02:54 pm

If you’re a pet owner who is considering a move to an apartment there are certain things you must be keep in mind. First, whether or not your pet will be accepted by most landlords depends primarily on the type, size and personality of your pet.

    Dogs:

If you own a large dog, apartment living is probably not for you. Not only will accepting landlords be hard to find, but your dog will not be happy in the confined space of an apartment. A large dog needs room to exercise and play, neither of which is usually available in an apartment setting.

If you plan to move to an apartment, make sure your dog is one that will adapt easily to this change in environment. Usually smaller, lap dogs are the best choice. However, even smaller dogs can cause problems.

If your dog barks or whines a lot you may well find yourself at odds with the landlord, as well as with other tenants. Many times your dog only causes a disturbance because it’s lonely or bored. If you’re gone during the day, you can sometimes alleviate these problems by hiring a pet walker to come in and give your dog attention and exercise.

You must also keep in mind that most apartment complexes have leash laws so you will have to accompany your dog each time it goes outside. Since most complexes don’t have areas where it’s safe for your dog to run free, this is as much a matter of your dog’s safety as it the protection of other tenants.

    Cats:

Cats are the pets of choice for apartments. Most are not as socially oriented as dogs and are quite happy left on their own. As long as your cat has a nice spot to curl up and take a nap, space isn’t an issue. More than likely your pet is a house cat so frequent trips outside aren’t required.

But you must realize that some landlords do not accept cats any more willingly than they do dogs. Some have a strict “no pets” rule. If that’s the case, don’t consider renting there. If your pet is discovered you may be evicted and/or fined.

    Other Pets:

“Pocket pets” such as fish, birds, and reptiles usually don’t pose a problem when it comes to renting. However, you should still check with your prospective landlord to make sure.

    General Tips:

Landlords who do accept pets often require a pet deposit. This is intended to cover any damage your dog or cat does to the premises, as well as additional cleaning that may be necessary when you leave the apartment.

If you’re searching for apartments that accept pets, there are many places to go for help. You’ll find lots of websites and message boards dedicated to this subject. You can also enlist the help of a local realtor or relocation specialist who usually have lists of “pet-friendly” apartments. Just make sure you’re clear on the policy regarding pets before you sign any rental agreement.

If you take into account your pet’s needs, as well as those of your landlord, you’ll be much more likely to find an apartment that meets your needs.

    Happy apartment hunting!

Direct Answers – Column for the week of May 5, 2003

I’m very disturbed these days, and if it continues, I might get mad soon. I am 28. I recently went to see my parents in India and met a girl for marital purposes. I got convinced by my parents and family she is a perfect match for me.

In an impulsive moment I said yes and got engaged. Very soon afterwards I realized I don’t like her, and there are major compatibility and personality issues between us. Now my parents and her parents are pushing for marriage as soon as possible.

I tried to speak to them and the girl about all the things going on in my mind. From that moment on I was like a rebel in the family, and everyone is against me. They want me to marry this girl. I told the girl I want to call it off, but she doesn’t agree to my theory.

I know deep inside me it’s not going to work, but at the same time I love my parents and don’t want to make things ugly. If we marry, I can see we will both live a miserable life as I won’t be able to develop love for her, and it will end in a dreadful divorce.

    Ajay

Ajay, what a way to step into marriage! You thought you were going home for a family visit, and your parents thought they were planning the rest of your life. You don’t like your prospective bride, and now you have to weigh why this decision does not belong to you.

In these circumstances many people cave in. In an odd twist of fate those forced into marriage often become defenders of arranged marriage, just as those hazed joining a fraternity enthusiastically haze new members.

You would like to find a reason which will silence all arguments on the other side, but the more you justify yourself, the more they will wear you down with counter arguments and “success stories.” The problem with letting other people make decisions for us is that we, not they, have to live with the consequences.

The only thing they can’t argue with is, “No.” There is no appeal from a simple no. The worst thing your family can do is disown you. But they can only do that once. If you accede to their wishes now, they can use the hammer of disapproval over many other issues.

You have to decide what your life will be. That is part of growing up and becoming an adult. When you make your own decisions, good or bad, you will feel life is under your control. There is a sense of justice, a deep sense of fairness, in a life lived this way.

    Tamara

    Upstairs Downstairs

I met my downstairs neighbor on a Saturday morning a month ago when he complained about my loud music. He noted it’s good music, but this particular day it was past his breaking point. I felt horrible, but I couldn’t remember his face because I hadn’t put my contacts in. I recall another time he banged on the ceiling at 1 a.m.

Last week we spoke again about neighborly ground rules. It was a comfortable and easy conversation. I wore my contacts, and yes, he is cute. He noted whenever I see his car in the driveway, he’s home, except for next Thursday when he’ll be at a game. Is this a hint to follow up on?

    Torri

Torri, this is definitely a hint to follow up on, but the question is what is he hinting.

My guess is he thinks you are his annoying neighbor who plays her music too loud. If that’s right, he wants the car in the driveway to be a warning to you to keep the music down and stop dancing on his head. But he could have other intentions. If so, they will soon be plain enough.
