UK workers are completely unaware of their employment rights, especially when it comes to laws related to redundancy, Which? Legal Service found in a recent study. In 2008 and 2009, 10% of the working population had found their pay packages cut down substantially or being frozen. Further, 6% of the workers lost their jobs in the same period. As a result, workers are still facing feelings of uncertainty and panic. More than 25% think that their employer may remove them from employment anytime while a little less than 25% are worried about their salary being reduced some time soon.

However, 98% of them have no clue about their employment rights in such a scenario. Half of the workers do not know that they have to compulsorily work for their employer for two years to be able to be compensated in case of redundancy. The status is even worse in case of the amount of redundancy compensation as 70% of the workforce do not know the amount they are eligible to receive as compensation.

They are also not aware of the ‘last in, first out’ basis on which redundancy functions. 58% of them also think that their employer has a right to change their terms of employment after a 30 days’ notice.

These findings worry Peter Vicary-Smith, Which? Legal Service’s chief executive, who said that it is important for workers to know their rights. They may have to face problems of redundancy at any point of time and must be ready for it.
